The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) launched at the end of April 2009 to give further impetus to the growth of Apprenticeships in England. Apprenticeship numbers have more than trebled in the past ten years. Businesses across the country are realising the significant benefits that Apprenticeships deliver, not only in terms of a highly skilled workforce but also by boosting productivity and staff retention. Research shows that Apprenticeships are an optimal way of training and developing staff, helping employers secure a supply of people with the skills and qualities they need to meet current and future requirements.

The NAS is tasked with increasing the number of Apprenticeship opportunities through:

  • Delivering one to one expert advice on Apprenticeships to employers;
  • Stimulating demand for Apprenticeships from individuals;
  • Providing a new web-based service through which employers advertise vacancies, and potential apprentices apply online;
  • Ensuring that training is relevant, timely and of high quality;
  • Working with employers and training providers to identify and respond to gaps and emerging skills needs.
